Lockdown Poppy

Terry Chainey | Sunday 8 Nov 2020

No public processions, no pomp, no glory
We stand alone, with a pinned poppy to recall the story

As coronavirus spikes the government reacts
No more foolishness, we see the facts
Infection rates rise and death numbers soar
This unseen enemy lurks at the door

This present warfare today’s global task
Isolate, keep your distance, wear a mask

Over 75 years ago at war, fear of gas, we heard a similar call
Escape to air raid shelters, no one knowing where the bombs would fall

Much bravery, self-sacrifice, such courage people gave
Selflessly, determined others to save
We steadfastly resolve to remember them all
To stop, be still, reflect and quietly recall
Their sacrifice, their lives given, the greatest sacrifice of all

We pause this morning to remember, today’s war that is raging
Where doctors and nurses and carers battle for lives that need saving

We choose to honour our soldiers who died in the wars
We pray for today’s battle as this coronavirus roars

We pray Lord, protect, save and deliver, help us to see
What you are shaping and causing to be
Help us to realise your mercy and grace knows no end
For your Word is sure and upon it we can depend

Lord we choose to remember
Father such was your great love for us You gave Your Son!
Eternity rejoices! Praise God! For the covenant is done!
Forgiveness of sin, washed and free
Your Holy Spirit is Your gift and promise to me
I praise you Lord Jesus for communion with You
But Lord by Your grace, what for You can I do!
